Lucca Hotels - Accommodation Alternatives

Are you looking for Lucca Hotels for your accommodation when visiting this beautiful part of Tuscany?

When staying in Lucca, next to deciding if you stay inside or outside the walls of the city, the most important decision is to choose your accommodation wisely.

Undoubtedly the best way to experience Lucca is to live and walk freely within the walls of the city. Put on your walking shoes and go exploring or hire a bicycle and move around like the locals. Lucca is an easy city to explore. It is restricted to traffic and it's not too big, so discovering the city is a real pleasure.

Lucca Markets
There are a limited number of hotels inside the walls of Lucca. Below is a summary of the hotels available. Prices are a guide and range from low to high season for a standard double room.

2010 Price (Guide Only) Standard double room
Hotel Nobless | 5 star | from 255-300 Euro per night
Ilaria Hotel | 4 star | from 140-200 Euro per night
Universo Hotel | 3 star | from 80-160 Euro per night
Piccolo Hotel Puccini | 3 star | from 95-120 Euro per night
Hotel San Martino | 3 star | from 80-110 Euro per night

If you plan to have a car, make sure you ask about car parking arrangements as parking inside Lucca can be tricky.

Remember that Lucca is on the train line that runs from Pisa to Florence so the other alternative is to arrive by train. Bus services from Florence are also frequent and take about an hour. It's an ideal location for those who do not want to drive.

Another excellent alternative is to rent an apartment...
This can be a less expensive option and also gives you the opportunity to really experience the city as a 'local'. Delicious food stores, great restaurants, good bottle shops (enotecas), bars and cafes make the option of an apartment a very easy experience.

Most apartments are only available on a weekly basis but it is worth asking for shorter stays if you are travelling in the low season.

If you need a few bedrooms for family, friends or the occasional visitor an apartment is the most economical way to go. Many travellers use apartments as a base when travelling in Tuscany and often take day or overnight trips to Cinque Terre, Florence, Siena or Venice. Just leave the luggage behind and travel lightly.

Also the convenience of preparing your own breakfast, lunch or dinner adds to the 'local' experience and certainly saves money. Keep in mind that most apartments have washing machines so it's also a great opportunity to regroup if you are continuing to travel. Remember that laundry services in Italian hotels can be outrageously expensive. Sometimes it's cheaper to ditch the clothes and buy a new wardrobe!

Hotels outside the walls...

The most convenient ones are Hotel Rex and Hotel Celide which are just outside the walls.

2010 Price (Guide Only) Standard double rooms
Rex Hotel | 4 star | from 80-140 Euro per night
Celide Hotel | 4 star | from 110-210 Euro per night
Grand Hotel Guinigi | 4 star | from 110-210 Euro per night
Hotel San Marco | 3 star | from 95-120 Euro per night

Remember that if you decide to stay outside the walls you will have a fair walk to get to the heart of town. Driving inside the walls is not easy, particularly in peak season, and you will need patience when looking for a car spot.

Staying outside the walls is a more 'suburban' experience as you will be on the outskirts of the town of Lucca. If you do decide to stay outside the wall a better option is to venture a little further and head to the countryside.

Renting an apartment, villa or farmhouse in the countryside...
A huge variety of accommodation is available such as apartments, villas and farmhouses. Every budget can be catered for. This is another excellent alternative to hotel accommodation.

If you need a few bedrooms for family, friends or the occasional visitor renting properties in the countryside can be the most economical way to go.
